For anyone who has read this blog, I know, I know…this isn’t really a food blog. That being said, there are things that I want to do in the kitchen. Not regular meal planning prep (the Mrs. is WAY better at that), but dad-related things: cooking projects with the kids, over the top ridiculous recipes, silly food stuff for the kids to eat, and all things bacon-related.

This one fits in the over-the-top-ridiculous category. This is the recipe I chose to make myself, on Father’s Day, because it’s that kind of good (and that kind of not-good for you). It’s also something that everyone loves (I mean, what’s not to love; it’s French toast meets Nutella?!). It’s also super simple to make.

You can easily make this with just a couple pieces of bread or the whole loaf; It’s easy to scale. The recipe below is for a whole loaf of bread which, for the generic loaf I bought at Kroger, gave me 20 slices if you don’t count the butts (because no one’s going to eat those anyway).

And since I hate finding a recipe on a blog that’s loaded with too much exposition just to squeeze in an extra ad or two, I’ll get right to it.

Ingredients:

  • Loaf of bread (white or whole wheat sandwich bread. Don’t go fancy here, just get the cheap stuff)

  • Chocolate hazelnut spread (Nutella or generic)

  • 2 Eggs

  • ½ cup of milk

  • 1 tsp vanilla (optional)

  • Butter (to lube the pan)

  • Powdered sugar (optional)

    Directions:

    1. Flatten the bread with a rolling pin (or wine/whiskey bottle).

      "Flatten

      1. Cut off the crusts (in know, I’m still 6 years old…).

        ""

        1. Spread the hazelnut spread on one side of the bread (It’s tempting to spread it on thick. Don’t do it! The bread is super thin already which only lowers the ratio of bread to hazelnut spread in favor of the yummy sweetness).

          ""

          1. Roll up the bread.

            ""

            1. Beat the eggs with the milk and vanilla (the vanilla isn’t necessary, but it does fancy it up some) in a shallow bowl or pie dish.

              ""

              1. Heat a pan over medium heat.

              2. Dip the rolled-up hazelnut yummy bread in the egg mixture and roll it around to cover it completely.

                ""

                1. Add a pat of butter to the pan (or if you grew up watching Paula Deen, a half a stick. That’s a joke. Don’t actually do that…).

                2. When the butter is melted and there is a little sizzle to the pan (don’t over-heat the pan; you don’t want to burn the butter), add the rolled-up bread.

                  ""

                  1. When one side is browned, flip over and brown the next side. In the end I needed to brown four sides.

                    ""

                    1. Put on a plate and dust some powdered sugar through a metal strainer (optional).

                      ""
There isn’t a problem with this image. I just didn’t have any powdered sugar…

                      1. Take fancy photos and post on Instagram (#dadstuff).

To any single young men out there (I don’t know why you’re reading this as it’s a site for dads…): this is how you get the ladies. I definitely got much more attractive in college when I started watching Food Network and I learned how to cook. I wooed my wife by making muffins and cheesecake, and she’s way out of my league, just sayin’.
